What do you usually do on Sunday?
I usually try to schedule all outings for Saturday. That way, Sunday can be the lazy day. Sunday used to be about sleeping in but with a 10-month old baby - Ha! Sleeping in! Instead, I spend the first part of the morning waiting until she's tired enough to take a nap. This involves trying to tire her out with lots of tickling and pillow-tunnel-crawling and then some chasing each other around downstairs. Aaron generally makes a huge meal of cheesy garlic eggs and toast with peanut butter. I'm so glad I taught him that recipe. I have a pot of very dark, very caffeinated coffee ready to go from the night before. I also generally try to see how long I can go before actually changing out of my pajamas and taking a shower. Yesterday it was around 1pm. But only because we were out of eggs and I had to make cookies.
If you had a band, what would you call yourselves?
Question submitted by Zoot.
I have always thought that "The Juicy Pucker" would be a great band name.
Aaron just called from home:
"I'm calling to tell you that your daughter has figured out how to turn the TV on and off."
"Listen to this." (sounds of Sophie squealing and TV turning on and off)
"Now how am I supposed to watch TV when I'm home with her?!?"
If you could open any sort of restaurant, what would it be like?
I would open a restaurant on Cape Cod - Truro, probably - because it means I'd be near the beach. Or maybe on Kauai. And my family would visit all the time. I like pretty much all types of foods, so the menu would be based on what I'm craving on that particular day. This would not have been a successful restaurant when I was pregnant: "I'll have plain pasta with a tiny bit of butter and a tiny bit of salt." or "I'll take a black & white cookie and twelve pounds of Bing cherries and a jar of baby gherkins."
Actually, I've seriously discussed opening a bakery but I'd hate the long hours. And I'd probably get bored with making the same things day after day.
Or, my sister is very into organic farming and she keeps bringing up maybe owning an organic farm together with a little restaurant where I could sell my cakes and pastries and it wouldn't have the same crazy hours as a traditional bakery. I love making wedding and party cakes, but I need a separate baking kitchen to do it professionally. And I need customers. And money.
What was your favorite candy when you were a kid? How does that compare to now?
Reese's Pieces. I would put them in the fridge so that they were especially crunchy and then eat them while drinking Canada Dry ginger ale. For some reason. I'm really not OCD. Really. Also, I'm a child of the 80s.
I also loved to eat regular M&Ms but I'd hold them in my hand for a while to get the chocolate nice and melted. I still do this.
I really, really wish I had been able to go. Although the main reason for me wanting to go is to meet some of my internet crushes, there are some very intriguing seminars. The word on the street is that next year's BlogHer will be closer to the east coast so maybe that will be more doable. Aaron was really pushing for me to go, but the thought of traveling all that way in addition to the pressure of actually having to go up to people to introduce myself superceded my desire. There are some who have said that it is just a mommy event - but I don't think that is it at all. Just because a lot of the women speaking are moms does not make it a mommy event. It feels like a strong network of incredible women finally getting to meet and discuss writing and life and technology.
I guess the good thing about not going is that now I don't have to panic about what I'm going to wear.
What was the highlight of this past weekend?
Aaron and I finally sat down and looked over our finances and the viability of buying a house in the near future. The future looks grim due to the fact that I'm the one with the job and he's the one trying to get his PhD (although he does get paid a little and he doesn't have to pay for school). Add into that the credit card debt and the student loans from undergrad school. However, we've finally constructed a budget (something that should have happened years ago). So, the numbers gave me a bit of a panic attack but now I feel better knowing we have a plan.
What's your favorite drink or cocktail? What's in it?
Question submitted by charm.vox.com
Currently I'm into the dark beers - one of my favorites is Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale. In the summer I love gin & tonics with a little bit of lime. No ice. In winter, I tend to have Jack and Gingers (highballs?). Those I like with diet ginger ale because it isn't as sweet as full-sugar ginger ale. Also no ice. No need to water these babies down.
I just got back from the bathroom and my suspicions are confirmed. My hair looks like complete ass today. After cutting it all off for charity, and because they ended up taking more than I had originally planned, I decided I'm going to grow it to at least a bob.
For the massive cutting, I went to a new stylist.
Who *said* she knows how to cut curly hair, but it's becoming quite apparent that she LIED. Add to that the humidity and the bad habit of running my fingers through it absent-mindedly and all of a sudden I have a badger-textured-brillo-weirdness on my head. I tried to bobby pin some of it back but now it just looks, well, it looks fucking horrible.
And what would make all that worse? Let's see: maybe trying to dye it back to the original dark brown color (after trying to grow out the previous color job and then being way too impatient) and evidently picking the wrong brand of dye to use because it is now a weird orange in the florescent lights here at work. At home, matted down with styling creme and damp from the shower, it doesn't look half bad. Here? At work? Under this crap lighting and now that it has dried? It looks utterly ass-tastic.
So, what did I do yesterday? I bought some more dye and am planning on attacking the varmit on my head this weekend. Yeah, that will fix it.
Or I might invest in a wig. I wonder what that will look like under these lights.
